REPORT FROM FAREWELL HARBOUR RESORT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA COVERING THE
WATERS OF CAMPBELL RIVER, BLACKFISH SOUND, AND NORTHERN VANCOUVER ISLAND.

Issue No. 1 – June 3, 2002

OVERVIEW: The Chinook are moving in! Excellent reports from Campbell River and Kincome Inlet. Chinooks reported to 30 pounds. Same fish have moving into Minstral Inland area.

CHINOOK SALMON – On cut herring and white plugs.

COHO SALMON – None yet.

HALIBUT – Spotty.

OTHER BOTTOM FISH – Ling cod opened June 1 and is excellent.

CUTTHROAT TROUT – Small cutts on pink shrimp. Try the brackish water at creek mouths in an incoming tide.

WHALE WATCHING – We had a pod of monster humpback whales (40 tons) feeding in Blackfish Sound for about a week, but no sign of them the past few days. We see an occasional orca, but the main body of the killer whales is further south, closer to Victoria.

OTHER WILDLIFE – Black bear cubs and sows are crawling all over the Vancouver Island north/south coastal highway from about Telegraph Cove north to Port Hardy. The garbage dump just south of Port Hardy is a particular favorite. Right now there are 20 to 25 regulars there. Be careful driving.

Black bears and car fenders don’t mix. If you’re looking for great pictures, there’s a sea lion rookery on Stubbs Island with about 10-12 in
residence.
