TUNGSTEN CARBIDE SCISSORS, CLAMPS + STAINLESS AVAILABLE FROM DR. SLICK

DILLON, MT – Fly-fishing and all that goes with it has never been easier, thanks to new nippers, clamps, pliers and cutters including a new series of longer-lasting tungsten carbide tools from Dr. Slick Instruments for Anglers.

The German tungsten carbide tools – or T.C. Collection – from Dr. Slick initially includes three scissors and two clamps (hemostats), announced Kenneth A. High, M.D., president of the firm.

The Dr. Slick T.C. Collection includes:

Scissors – 3-1/2 inch Arrow, 4-inch All Purpose, and 4-1/2 inch Hair Scissors with tungsten carbide blades.

Clamps – 5-inch fine jaw Spring Creek, and 6-inch standard jaw Guide Clamp. Both clamps are forged of Grade A Japanese stainless steel with tungsten carbide inserts on the jaws.

Stainless steel tools new to the Dr. Slick catalog are:

Scissors/Pliers. At 4-3/4 inches, these make a welcome combination for both the fly-fisher and conventional fresh or saltwater angler for de-barbing and removing hooks, trimming and cutting tippets and leaders.

Pliers. A light saltwater/freshwater 5-1/2 inch bullet-head pliers with side cutters. Available in either satin or black with vinyl or foam grips. Engineered with a heavily serrated jaw – serrations and grooves going in opposite directions – the aggressive design has multiple uses.

Mini-barb crusher. A 5-inch needle-nose pliers for crushing hook barbs on the stream or at the tier’s bench. With attached lanyard.

Nipper. A new wrinkle on every angler’s favorite gadget. This one has an attached nail knot tool!

The new tungsten carbide tools from Dr. Slick have been long-anticipated in the fly-fishing community.

"Tungsten carbide is generally acknowledged to be seven times harder than stainless or other steels. It will hold a sharp edge seven times longer and function as a useful tool for some seven times as long. The metal is produced in Germany and is used extensively in cutting tools as well as steel alloys, electric lamp and heating filaments, and in electrical contacts. However, while tungsten carbide tools are extremely durable, as with any fine tool, care must be taken in handling," said High.

Additional Dr. Slick T.C. Collection tools will be announced throughout the year as they become available.

According to High, tungsten carbide tools will cost approximately three times more than comparable stainless steel tools. "But if a fly-tier uses a pair of standard scissors eight or 10 years, the Dr. Slick T.C. Collection tungsten carbide scissors will last 50 to 70 years or longer," he added.
